“See this? Here.” She handed him a white pebble, exactly the same size and shape as a jellybean. He popped it into his mouth. “No!” she shrieked. He froze. “It’s a pebble, not a jellybean! My little Melanie found it.” He spat it out on his palm. “How clever she must be. Well, no harm done,” he said. “She swallowed it once, you know,” she remarked. “No, I didn’t know that,” he replied. “We took her to the Doctor--there was nothing to be done but to watch her stool until she shat it out.” “Oh.” “Yes! It’s true! It’s perfectly clean now--although the dog snorts at it when she sniffs it.” “Sniffs it?” “Yes. We play ‘hide-and-seek’ with it and she finds it every time, no matter where we hide it. She finds it and brings it to us.” “In--its mouth?” “In her mouth, yes. Did you think that she’d grip it in her paw?!” “Has--has the dog…” “Fluffy. Her name’s Fluffy.” “Has Fluffy--swallowed her stink pebble?” “Why, yes, twice! You must be psychic. Are you an Aquarius?” He looked a little green. “It’s perfectly clean, silly. Look!” She popped it in her mouth. With a surprised laugh she announced she had swallowed the jellybean pebble.
