The deer don't drink the water where the river passes my front gate.
A young doe drowned there last winter when the water was up and the deer don't drink from that part of the river anymore. Her mother and brother were close by when it happened. Sometimes they visit that spot to gaze into the water with their noses so close to the river; they seem to miss her. They remind me of the fat ladies in the changeroom, lookin down, self conscious and sad. I turn down the lamp in my kitchen so they won't run, watch them anyway.
Stupid asshole deer.
