We had been waiting for the subway to come. It was 3am so we had waiting a while. Janice turned to me.

“Should we just go take a cab?”

But I didn’t have the money for a cab. We waited a while longer. No train. I could hear cars whizzing along above us. Finally, I gave in. “Okay, let’s go.”

We walked up the stairs, through the turnstiles, and out of the station. It was cold outside. We took a few steps. As we walked, I heard the sound of a train arriving under us. I heard the train’s doors opening. I heard them closing. I heard the train leaving the station.

I felt the weight in my chest. Janice and I walked toward the curb. I reached into my empty pockets and wondered what the hell I was going to do.
