Captain McBarton squinted, a sure indication that he felt nonplussed. What was going on with the tides these days? Why were they ebbing less than yesteryear? The statisticians could deny it if they liked. What did they know with their slide rules and sky charts? HE had to live it.

A lone barnacle clung to the Jolly Fraunces' starboard. It had been there for approximately 70 leagues.

McBarton increased the speed to 25 knots. "How much cod?" he thought grimly. "How much cod?"
