Really, Andromeda,
I do not resent you
for that fleeting boy
who put fire in your breast.
The girls and I……………
……………………………
……………………………
…or against this smooth stone.
The summer moon
wanes and by the hearth
I bury my onyx lyric
between the phases of my thighs.
……………………………

so weave flowers in your hair
and hasten with the olive oil.
Note: These newly discovered Sappho fragments were found on a scroll encased in an onyx phallus (dildonicon) excavated from what had apparently been a swamp on Lesbos in the sixth century BCE. Unfortunately, the dildonicon was not perfectly sealed, and the manuscript, the only one currently extant that dates from Sappho’s lifetime, was coated in a gooey, swampy membrane, which crystallized at some later date, rendering much of the text illegible (denoted by dots in the translation) and the meaning of the verse, not to mention the particular occasion, hopelessly lost.

02/25/2004qualcomm: i don't like this learned shit.
02/25/2004Texxx (4): Nice.
02/25/2004Jimson S. Sorghum: yup.
02/25/2004Jimson S. Sorghum: Oh, please, Feldspar, dildonicon? You love the "learned shit" when it's something you learned.
02/25/2004qualcomm: yeah but this has a fancypants scholarlyness that just rubs me wrong. so don't tell me.
02/25/2004annebot (3): I like your moxy, but we all know it's all a shallow rouse to use the word dildonicon.
02/25/2004Jimson S. Sorghum: I think you're getting caught up in the fact that this comes in a form that seems scholarly. Really, there are some pretty straight-forward jokes here. "Hurry with the olive oil" for example. And in the note: "rendering much of the text illegible...and the meaning of the verse...hopelessly lost..." It's just good ol' baudy humor....I think there have been far more erudite pieces that have been championed on this site. Read it again. It's funny.
02/25/2004Benny Maniacs (3): I thought it was imaginative but unfunny.
02/25/2004Benny Maniacs: And I think Jimson doth protest too much (she or someone she likes wrote it).
05/14/2004TheBuyer (4): dirty gold
08/7/2004scoop (3): This things stuffy and annoying, but decent use of dilonicon.
